What is a healthy city? What does it mean for a neighborhood to thrive and be vibrant? What creates fair housing, better transportation, social equity, gender equality, environmental health, and overall livability? Why do some people prosper, and others suffer, as cities grow and change? On top of this, what effect has the global pandemic had on them?

Voices of the City is a video installation and a documentary film that explores the evolving relationship that people have with their cities today. It invites seven filmmakers in seven diverse and divergent cities — Beirut, Stockholm, Toronto, Lagos, Medellin, Singapore, and Melbourne — to showcase those cities, while asking people a series of scripted questions. The goal is to reveal how and where people are living, how the pandemic is changing their values, and what hopes they have for the future of their communities.

All of this will be edited into a multimedia video installation by David and Hi-Jin Hodge, who will also film the Stockholm segment. When completed, Voices of the City will reveal unique moments of disruption to give voice to local filmmakers and their communities as they address a simple question: What kind of city do you want to live in?
